For a truly immersive experience, head to the Big Thicket National Preserve. This vast wilderness is a haven for nature enthusiasts, boasting diverse ecosystems, rare plant species, and a rich variety of birdlife. Embark on a guided nature walk or explore the park’s waterways by canoe, allowing the serene surroundings to captivate your senses.

Discover Jasper day 2: Step back in time

Delve into Jasper’s intriguing history on the second day of your stay. Begin with a visit to the Jasper County Historical Museum.  Located on the courthouse square, it’s in the location of the former Hancock Drug Store and houses artifacts and exhibits that tell the region’s story, from its early Native American inhabitants to its prominence during the timber and oil boom days. Uncover past eras through captivating displays and interactive exhibits.

Next, pay a visit to the Jasper Public Library and Genealogical Society and trace your family roots or learn more about the area’s genealogy. The knowledgeable staff can guide you through historical documents, records and resources, and help you discover hidden connections and personal narratives.

In the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll through downtown Jasper. The centerpiece of downtown is our beautiful courthouse. This lovely building was designed in the Italianate style by Eugene T. Heiner and built in 1889, and is so remarkable that it earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Continue your stroll on the town square, admire the charming architecture, and browse local stores. A favorite is Brandi’s House, featuring home decor, items for both men and women, great teacher gifts, and even a wedding and baby registry. Be careful, they have the best shortbread cookies in town (totally addictive!!).

On your way back to The Bird & Butterfly Inn, don’t hesitate to make a few stops :

  – Smitty’s Smokehouse is a must if barbeque is on your agenda. Ribs so tender, the meat literally falls off the bone.  Add some mac ‘n cheese to that order, you won’t be disappointed.

  – The Rusty Rooster and Junktique have some of best collections of antiques, dishes, glassware and other collectibles.  Whether you’re looking for something in particular or just looking, you will find something to take back home with you.  It’s a great way to walk off some of that BBQ.
