Fishing at Lake Sam Rayburn

With hundreds of lakes, reservoirs, and streams spread across the Lone Star State, fishing in Texas is more than just a pastime – it’s part of our culture and way of life. And when it comes to East Texas fishing,  Lake Sam Rayburn is legendary for its enormous size and the diversity of quality fish in its waters, from the shallow shore to the deepest depths (it’s an astonishing 80 feet deep in some places). With its 22 different access points and 750 miles of shoreline, the reservoir is also affectionately known as “Big Sam,” as massive as it is beautiful.

Our Jasper, Texas, bed & breakfast in the piney woods is just a short drive from Sam Rayburn Reservoir, so whether you plan to casually toss a line from the shore or rent a boat and explore all 178 square miles of the lake, this is a dream destination for both new and experienced anglers.

What You’ll Catch – World-Famous Bass, Plus More

People travel to Jasper from across the country to fish largemouth bass, which is highly prized for its taste (not too “fishy”) and consistent size – it’s not uncommon to reel in 5-10 lb bass reliably. Springtime is also prime bass season at Lake Sam Rayburn, as it follows the bass spawning period, and they feed more than ever – hungry fish means more action on your line! Aim for the shallower depths during this time of year, and the “lower” portion of the lake nearest our location is ideal. As summer sets in and the water heats up, bass will migrate towards deeper water, but during early morning and late afternoon, you can still have good luck in the shallower areas.

Two other popular fish at the lake are crappie and catfish. Crappie is one of the most well-known fish throughout North America, easy to reel in, and excellent tasting. Our catfish will test your skill and strength, as they often grow to 40-50 lbs! And blue cats and flatheads are the real prize catches, with the record at 84 lbs!

Your Perfect Day on the Water – A Guide to Sam Rayburn

The Bird and Butterfly Inn is located just off Highway 255, known as Sam Rayburn Parkway, and is just a short drive from the lake. Better still, as our East Texas bed and breakfast is located on the banks of the Angelina River, you can easily drop a line before breakfast and then venture out.

Overlook Park, a mere 2.5 miles down the road, is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon fishing from the shore. Plan to bring a picnic, relax on the shaded benches, swim, and enjoy the gorgeous views across the lake (there’s no better place to watch the sunset).

If you want to explore the lake, get out on the water by renting a pontoon boat for the day in Brookeland and head out from Umphrey Boat Ramp (the nearest place to put in on our side of Sam Rayburn). Lake-Boat-Rental is the best deal for a full-day boat rental – their cheapest 21-foot boat can accommodate five adults and includes gas and operating instructions. After you get set up, you can purchase a $5 day pass to launch out of Umphrey Boat Ramp, conveniently just a mile away. Call them at (409) 795-0140 for more info about their boat rental options.

Every day of east Texas fishing at Sam Rayburn Reservoir should start with a visit to Needmore Tackle, your one-stop shop for gear, helpful tips on where the fishing is best that day, and fresh bait. And bait-wise, you can’t go wrong, as you’ll have equally good luck with crankbait, spinnerbait, earthworms, jigs, and even shrimp and chicken livers (both great for catfish).

Plan Your Jasper Fishing Getaway

Whether planning a couples getaway with quality fishing time or a trip with old angler buddies, our East Texas bed and breakfast makes the ideal home base for your fishing fun. Take advantage of our weekday Stay Longer special, especially during the upcoming summer months, when the lake is busier than ever. In addition to getting 5% off when you stay from Monday-Thursday, you’ll also avoid the weekend crowds and have more of the lake (and fish) to yourself!

For the non-fishing members, we suggest getting out for a bike ride, a short hike, or just relaxing on our wrap-around porch and enjoying the sounds of the waterfall.

Book your stay with us and discover why “Big Sam” fishing is the stuff of legends!
